History

History Statement of Intent

At Kingsway Primary Academy we are committed to providing a high quality history education, giving all students a broad and balanced view of the History of Britain and other societies around the world. In this, students will develop a well-rounded knowledge of the past and its events, with intention to improve every student’s cultural capital, understanding of the world around them and their own heritage. This will be achieved through studies such as: the nature of ancient civilisations; the expansion and dissolution of empires; characteristic features of past non-European societies; achievements and follies of mankind. It is important that children understand the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time. We believe the study of history inspires children’s curiosity, encourages them to ask critical questions and enables them to have a better understanding of the society in which they live in. Throughout the curriculum, children are taught the key concepts of history to help extend their understanding and provide them with skills and knowledge that can be applied across all curriculum areas. This will be achieved through:

• Possessing a secure understanding of the chronology of the British Isles and other important periods of global history. 
• By discovering links and connections to the History they learn and the wider community and locality.
• Furthering their knowledge and explanations of change and continuity over time.
• Identifying the significance of events in an historical context.
• Identifying cause and effect of major historical events.  

In Key Stage 1 children will develop an awareness of the past. They will learn about significant individuals who have contributed to national and international achievements. Children will also learn about significant historical events within the local area such as the history and impact of the Runcorn/Widnes Bridges. They will also study changes within living memory as well as events beyond living memory that are nationally or globally significant such as The Great Fire of London. In Key Stage 2 children will continue to appreciate history in a chronological context.

They will develop a secure understanding of British, local and world history. Children will consider connections, contrasts and trends over time and develop the appropriate use of historical terms. To support children’s learning, appropriate trips will be planned for each year group as well as applicable visits to school from Historians.
